20 years today-Mosaic Web browser

The first popular graphical web browser, Mosaic, was released  January 23rd 1993 and I recall using version 0.9 as my major HTML tool in the period.

That revolutionary and exciting browser evolved into the commercial browser NetScape in 1994 and the Internet browser wars were to start a few years later when Microsoft introduced Internet Explorer.

It was amazing time to work in the creative fields as Apple Computers was making computing for the rest of us a reality. I stumbled on to a Macintosh during a photo assignment for the Canadian launch of  the Mac SE.

The Macintosh SE‘s notable new features, compared to its similar predecessor the Macintosh Plus, were:

  • First compact Macintosh with an internal drive bay for a hard disk (originally 20 MB or 40 MB) or a second floppy drive
  • First compact Macintosh that featured an expansion slot (SE stood for “System Expansion”)
  • Used the Apple Desktop Bus (ADB), introduced with the Apple IIGS, for keyboard and mouse interface
  • Improved SCSI support with faster data throughput
  • Better reliability and longer life expectancy due to the addition of a cooling fan

The software program MacDraw featured in our photography and was a vector based drawing application released along with the first Apple Macintosh systems in 1984. The first version of MacDraw was similar to that of MacPaint, featuring both the same tools and patterns. However MacDraw was vector based, meaning that an object’s properties and placement can be changed at any time.

Hello world! 2013 reboot

This WordPress version of the HooPmedia site opened on 21 March 2013.

HooPmedia.com domain was registered on 27-Nov-1996 and has existed as a private domain for client driven projects until today. There is a lot of work ahead and it should be an interesting process of looking back and moving forward simultaneously.

RWD Frameworks

RWD image

Responsive Web Design popped up on my radar in early 2011 when working on an update for Egan.com

Once I got my head around the concept there was no looking back. Writing HTML5 in a responsive “Mobile First” approach is quite involved so I was delighted to stand on the shoulders of some great coders and especially Luke Wroblewski. Luke inspired a number of pre-built HTML, CSS and JavaScript projects bundled into an easy to use framework. A number of these emerging frameworks were explored before settling in on Bootstrap as the tool I would focus on.

Twitter Bootstrap is a front-end development framework for creating desktop and mobile web applications. Bootstrap started as an internal project at Twitter but soon became an open source project, one of the most active on GitHub with over 300 contributors. Foundation was a close second but BootStraps overall appearance and clear CSS conventions won out for the projects I was planning at the time.

RWD frameworks reviewed in 2011-2 included:

Egan Binder Gallery

Egan’s Binder contents changed from year to year. This gallery showcases some of the most interesting covers.

Read about the Binder here.

Egan Binder

Egan Binder 2K

Egan Visual has offered visual communication tools to the Contract Office Furniture Industry since 1967.

As a business to business B2B enterprise, marketing has been at the core of the business from the very beginning. Egan sells to companies including Google, Boeing and the US Government via a team of highly professional independent local Representative firms. The products are not available in retail or general consumers so the Product Catalog Binder is the store.

On the wall. Off the wall.  On the Edge.

The product roster in 2000 began to include products like the PowerPlane workstations that were not wall mounted visual-boards and TeamBoard offered leading edge technology. The binder redesign brings all those new evolutionary changes to the brand in a big way.

Product Catalog Binder is the store

The product roster is constantly renewing with tertiary products falling into Custom Response or removed entirely. Each year new products are introduced and not all survive to become core products. This makes for a great deal of dynamic change which for analog print projects can be very expensive very quickly. Print brochures are optimally printed in large quantities to reduce their individual unit costs. Further these hard copies need to be sent into the field and introduced to the Interior Design marketplace.

Managing change, refreshing and maintaining brand was a central aspect of my work with Egan over 16 years of full time work. The binder and web sites were central to creating the new content but were far from the only activities that Egan required to go to market year in-year out. There is a gallery of images of the binder and contents here.

Some of the more interesting brochures and projects related to the binder:

  • PowerPlane Introduction–including metallic ink
  • TeamBoard Education–content rethink
  • EganINK Inroduction–new opportunities that need explanation
  • EganWall Introduction–product concept through development to production
  • Product Showcase with 3 page gatefolds
